Handmade in La Palma - How to Smoke a Cigar
On the Canary Island of La Palma, the local men will tell you that their hand rolled cigars are as good as those from Cuba. El Roque, a 'purero' (cigarmaker) insists that Fidel Castro himself admitted as much and that La Palma cigars were favourites of Sir Winston Churchill. Grand claims for sure, but they are exported to Spain’s Royal Household and ex Spanish Prime Ministers are known to have indulged in a puff or two of La Palma’s finest ‘puros’ rolled in sepia toned warehouses like ‘Vargas’ which looks as though it belongs in downtown Havana. What’s more, they’re far cheaper than their Cuban counterparts which is probably why every other man walking the streets of La Palma’s capital city Santa Cruz de la Palma has one chomped firmly between his teeth. How to enjoy cigars like a ‘Palmero’ Don’t keep the cigar in your mouth while you light it. It’s a crime to use fuel lighters to light the cigar, their fumes can affect the flavour. Better to use matches. Before taking your first draw, blow through the cigar, to get rid of any unwanted flavours picked up during lighting (see above). Fill your mouth with smoke, but don’t inhale, then release the smoke slowly. Wait at least a minute between draws. DON’T keep the cigar in your mouth for longer than three minutes. It becomes soggy and loses flavour (This one is pretty much ignored by Palmeros who never actually remove it from their mouths). Follow these for a really satisfying and flavoursome smoke.
