Don’t miss the Dragons on Tenerife
Tenerife is an island filled with mystery and legend. Amongst them, is the legend of the Drago Tree. In Greek mythology, when Atlas slew the hundred-headed dragon known as Ladon in order to steal the golden apples from the Garden of Hesperides, for every drop of the dragon’s blood that spilled, a tree sprang up. Every tree had as many crowns as the dragon’s heads and when its bark was cut, it ran red like the dragon’s blood. Considered holy by the Guanche (Tenerife’s indigenous people) its bark was prized for its curative properties and its sap was used as varnish. It’s even said that the Stradivarius violin owes its resonance to being varnished with the sap of the Drago, or Dragon’s Blood as it’s known. The Ice Age pushed the habitat of the Drago Tree so far south that today it only grows naturally in Tenerife, La Palma, Madeira and Cape Verde. One prized specimen in La Orotava allegedly attained a height of 25 metres with a girth of 15 metres but was unfortunately destroyed in a storm. There are many fine specimens of this magnificent tree in the North of Tenerife, including the Millenium Drago in Icod de los Vinos which is believed to be anything up to 3000 years old. If you’re planning a trip to Tenerife, whatever else you do, don’t miss the Dragons.
